AdBlock Plus Adds Support for Fennec

Thanks to Fabrice Desré and Wladimir Palant, development builds of AdBlock Plus support Fennec! The port embraces Fennec’s minimalistic design asthetic – exposing only a simple options UI. However, this is more than enough to make a great impact on browsing in Fennec.

Besides reducing the visual clutter on web pages, ad-heavy pages load noticeably faster! As Wladimir notes in his post, AdBlock Plus will only work in nightly builds of Fennec (version 1.0b6pre). Install a nightly version (including desktop versions) or use the new nightly update channel from your Maemo device. He also mentions that work to improve the first-run experience is coming in future releases.

Install a development build of AdBlock Plus by navigating to https://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/adblockplus/ using Fennec and click on the most recent XPI file. Fennec will step you through installing the add-on.

Thank you so much for this. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how long it takes for my N900 to be delivered unlocked to Australia. It may not be until after the official 1.0 release!

Sounds awesome, I don’t have an N900 but if I did I’d be even more happy right now. I can’t actually imagine the web without AdBlock Plus.

    Hi,
I’m starting to develop extensions. I downloaded this: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/1.0b5/fennec-1.0b5.en-US.win32.zip
I already read the Get Started links: https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-PT/mobile/challenge

    Now i’m read this: https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Firefox_addons_developer_guide

That is the way to develop extensions for mobile phone?

    Thanks

@Jose – I would use this information for creating an add-on specific to Fennec:

    HI,
I’m really new at extensions but i have an ideia and i want really enter in the contest so i’m doing a high effort to can complete my extension before 7 of december.

    I created this directory: C:\Users\Zé\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Fennec\Profiles\tep0vwfr.default\extensions\metropt@graphicalnation.com

    My install.rdf is:

    metropt@graphicalnation.com
    metRo IT

    bla bla bla

I want to start to cread the extension and i have two questions:
-can i add a button to control bar?
-I read that in Fennec it rendered HTML and drawn into a element, i want to know if i can drawn something inside that canvas per example a blue box. When we click somewhere inside the canvas and if it a hyperlink it will open that link, so the Fennec have the information about the points where we can click?

    Thanks,
    José Xavier
